Thump. Thump. Thump. The knocks on the door were obviously not Mom’s, or anyone else’s. Emma was frightened​. She could only think of one thing that made that sound…

Emma sat bolt upright in her wooden loft bed, bonking her head on the ceiling. First day of school and she was already having those axe murderer nightmares again. “Good grief!” She muttered to herself as she got ready for school. She just barely caught the school bus as it prepared to drive away. She took a seat next to Nevaeh Pocryo, her best friend and next-door neighbor. “Late again?” she asked Emma incredulously. Emma nodded her head as she rummaged through her bag for her inheritance from her dead father, who was also an engineer. She finally pulled out a small box with the words ‘Emma, my one and only’ written on it. Emma opened the box. Inside was a small, robotic, toy cat. “What the…” Nevaeh asked. Then she giggled and said, “I guess that thing’s really special, eh? Otherwise he wouldn’t have-”
“Stop it, Nev.” Emma flashed Nevaeh a stern glance. Her father was awesome. Even if he sometimes was a little weird. Emma checked the battery slot. Her dad had put one battery in backwards to save power. Emma corrected it, and, in that instant, the little robot came to life…
